Breakfast - The Most Important Meal of the Day

Why does the most important meal of the day have to fall so early in the morning?  That seems like some kind of cruel joke played on moms everywhere.  We are told it even affects how they perform in school.  That's a lot of pressure for 6 am.

 

In an effort to make mornings a little easier, I've compiled a list of things that my kids will eat and that I have time and brain function to make.  I am not a sugar Nazi about most things, but I am when it comes to breakfast.  I feel it's impossible to get around sugar all together, but these foods are better than most.

Lunch Box Ideas

It seems like I always fall into a rut when it comes to packing lunches for the kids.  It's so important to me that they eat what I pack and that it's healthy enough to keep their little brains charged for the remainder of the day.  I like to get their input and for the most part, I let them choose.  I've decided that this year, they are going to sit down with me on grocery shopping day and go through this list and make out their lunch menu for that week.  (Yes, I realize this might sound a little ambitious - we'll see J)  This will give me the heads up on what to buy and being the meal planner that I am, hopefully eliminate the lunch box stress.

  • Raisins for cakes and breads will be plump and juicy if soaked in warm water before being added to batter or dough.
  • If you’ve over salted soup or vegetables, add cut raw potatoes and discard once they have cooked and absorbed the salt.
  • Brownies will not stick to a plastic knife when they are being cut.

Strategies for Successful Menu Planning
  • Keep the kitchen table clean. Make it a sacred - no dumping site.
  • Print your menu & grocery list on the same day every week. A new menu will come out by midnight on Thursday night. Get in the habit.
  • Pick the same day of every week to do your shopping. Again make it a habit.
  • Give it time. It will become a habit and it will get easier. Stick with it & you'll wonder how you ever managed before.
